    Mandarin verbal reduplication and the one-delimitation principle

    It has long been observed that an eventuality may be associated with at most one delimitation. This paper argues that the incompatibility between Mandarin verbal reduplications and several post-verbal result-denoting elements is one of the cases to which the one-delimitation principle applies. The discussion of Mandarin verbal reduplication contributes to our understanding of the one-delimitation principle by showing that (i) the one-delimitation principle not only applies to resultatives but also other result-denoting elements; (ii) vP is the domain for the one-delimitation principle

    Financially Motivated LMP Manipulation By Aggregators in Power Markets

    Renewable energy accounts for a sizeable share within modern power systems and aggregators of renewable generators play an important role in the electricity market. However, because renewable generators produce power intermittently, it is hard to monitor and supervise the behavior of the aggregators. There is a chance for aggregators to manipulate the locational marginal prices (LMPs) in the power market by curtailing generation in order to increase their profits. In this thesis we propose a tri-level model that can quantify aggregators’ potential profits. This model is based on both a real-time optimal dispatch and an LMP clearing procedure. With this model, the relationship between curtailment of generation and profits of aggregators was studied by using different backup generators in an IEEE 14-bus power system. At the same time, we found the most profitable point at which aggregators curtail generation. We also used the same IEEE 14-bus power system to devise a resilience strategy to keep LMPs steady throughout the whole power system. This resilience strategy led to a decline in aggregators’ motivation to manipulate LMPs in power markets. In the study, we show that the aggregators can increase their profits through the curtailment of generation and this behavior can lead to significant LMP changes in the whole power system. The profit of aggregators can be different when the independent system operators (ISOs) use different generators to make up the financially motivated curtailment. Further, this thesis shows that aggregators have the potential to conduct financially motivated LMP manipulation in the power market and it can push ISOs to improve the related management rules

    Determinants of renewable energy consumption: Importance of democratic institutions

    There has been an increase in the use of renewable energy sources over recent years, which has led to a strand of literature examining the determinants of renewable energy consumption. However, most of the research used linear estimation models while reviewing the determinants of renewable energy consumption and ignored the indirect effect of democratic institutions on renewable energy consumption. With the use of a panel threshold model, this paper demonstrates that democratic institutions play a significant role in renewable energy consumption. In countries in which the democratic rights of people are preserved better, higher economic growth leads to increased use of renewable energy consumption; however, there is a negative association between economic growth and renewable energy consumption in less democratic countries. Increased trade openness leads to lower growth rates of renewable energy consumption in less democratic countries, while increases in real oil prices lead to increased renewable energy consumption in less democratic countries but play no significant role in more democratic countries. The findings of this paper suggest that democratic institutions are vital in channelling economic resources (economic growth) to renewable energy, and increased trade openness is associated with lower rates of renewable energy deployment in less democratic countries.<br/

    Compass/Beidou-2 Studies: Acquisition Of Real-field Satellite Signals

    With the ever-increasing interests and demands of navigation and positioning services, Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) has been drawing more and more attention. Each every country or continent is trying to establish their own GNSS system. Compass, also known as Beidou-2, which is developed by China is one of the most popular GNSS in Asian continent. Compass project was started in 2000 and until now, there has been rather few public information regarding Compass. In order to test and analyse Compass, it is necessary to obtain the existing information about Compass. In addition, acquisition and navigation are the main parts of Compass system so that to acquire the signal and extraction the navigation message in a fast and accurate way is very important. In this thesis, the Compass signals and receivers as well as three important segments of Compass systems are discussed. In addition, possible methods to achieve acquisition of Compass signals are illustrated. Meanwhile, a simulator is carried out to simulate the acquisition of Compass real-time field signals. The simulation results show that the parallel code phase search algorithm can be used to acquire Compass signals

    Stereoscopic Omnidirectional Image Quality Assessment Based on Predictive Coding Theory

    Objective quality assessment of stereoscopic omnidirectional images is a challenging problem since it is influenced by multiple aspects such as projection deformation, field of view (FoV) range, binocular vision, visual comfort, etc. Existing studies show that classic 2D or 3D image quality assessment (IQA) metrics are not able to perform well for stereoscopic omnidirectional images. However, very few research works have focused on evaluating the perceptual visual quality of omnidirectional images, especially for stereoscopic omnidirectional images. In this paper, based on the predictive coding theory of the human vision system (HVS), we propose a stereoscopic omnidirectional image quality evaluator (SOIQE) to cope with the characteristics of 3D 360-degree images. Two modules are involved in SOIQE: predictive coding theory based binocular rivalry module and multi-view fusion module. In the binocular rivalry module, we introduce predictive coding theory to simulate the competition between high-level patterns and calculate the similarity and rivalry dominance to obtain the quality scores of viewport images. Moreover, we develop the multi-view fusion module to aggregate the quality scores of viewport images with the help of both content weight and location weight. The proposed SOIQE is a parametric model without necessary of regression learning, which ensures its interpretability and generalization performance. Experimental results on our published stereoscopic omnidirectional image quality assessment database (SOLID) demonstrate that our proposed SOIQE method outperforms state-of-the-art metrics. Furthermore, we also verify the effectiveness of each proposed module on both public stereoscopic image datasets and panoramic image datasets

    Entanglement Entropy of Topological Orders with Boundaries

    In this paper we explore how non trivial boundary conditions could influence the entanglement entropy in a topological order in 2+1 dimensions. Specifically we consider the special class of topological orders describable by the quantum double. We will find very interesting dependence of the entanglement entropy on the boundary conditions particularly when the system is non-Abelian. Along the way, we demonstrate a streamlined procedure to compute the entanglement entropy, which is particularly efficient when dealing with systems with boundaries. We also show how this method efficiently reproduces all the known results in the presence of anyonic excitations.Comment: 29 pages, 11 figure
